How much power a campus actually needs

A single hyperscale campus can be permitted for 300 MW to well over 1 GW — comparable to the demand of a mid-sized city, running flat out 24 hours a day. Unlike factories or offices, data centers have almost no daily or seasonal load curve, so utilities must plan for that draw during every peak. When several projects cluster in one service territory, the combined request can exceed everything the local utility currently serves.

Rates, cost allocation, and who pays

Serving a new large load usually requires new substations, transmission lines, and sometimes new generation. Those costs are recovered through rate cases. If the interconnection agreement does not require the operator to fund its own upgrades, the cost is spread across all ratepayers — meaning households can see higher bills for infrastructure built for one customer. Special contract rates and tax abatements can shift even more of the burden onto residents.

Reliability and blackout risk

Adding a very large, inflexible load tightens the reserve margin on peak days. In regions that already issue conservation appeals during heat waves or winter storms, that margin matters. Data centers also carry on-site diesel or gas backup generators, which protect the facility during an emergency but can add local air emissions precisely when air quality is worst.

Generation mix and emissions

New round-the-clock demand is often met by whatever is dispatchable, which in many markets means natural gas or extending the life of coal plants. Corporate renewable-purchase claims are usually annual matching, not hour-by-hour, so a facility can be 100 percent renewable on paper while still driving fossil generation at 2 a.m. Ask whether the load is matched hourly and where the new supply physically comes from.

What to ask for

Request the interconnection study and the requested megawatt capacity, who funds substation and transmission upgrades, whether a special rate or economic-development tariff applies, what curtailment or demand-response obligations the operator accepts during grid emergencies, and the number, fuel, and permitted runtime hours of on-site backup generators.
